News Letter for Issue #4
Well, I hope you like the last letter. I'm going to leave most of the same
articles in as last time because they all are still working.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Helpers...
As I mentioned earlier, help or like a staff to work on this stuff would be
greatly appreciated(not to mention the long ad to be placed about your BBS).
well, take an example....
I suggest you call Star Base (1) Micro System's BBS NOW!
Having two nodes(441-2168 and 883-2008), this BBS has great potential. Being
a fairly unknown BBS, the sysop needs your call now! Hey, it's Major BBS, and
once you get validated, there's no real hassle.

Lotsa online games and stuff to do. CALL and join the new BBS that's starting
to build... JOIN NOW WHILE THE BBS IS GROWING!
How to try out America Online for TEN FREE HOURS...
If you haven't seen America Online yet, now's your chance! This great bulletin
board type service is similar to COMPUserve and Prodigy. In here, you can
access the Internet FTP sites and send and receive I-net mail. Nice chat
rooms, lots of files, and frequent visits by celebrities makes this a very
popular service. To get a disk in the mail COMPLETELY FREE with ten free
hours on it(trial), call 1-800-827-6364 and follow the directions(easiest with
a touch tone phone). SCREW that $24.00 crap they sell in the store and get it
for FREE.
New BBSer's forum...
Did you ever wonder how some people get those special characters like ½, Å,
▓, ╪, and £? Well, it's simple. Simply hold down ALT, and then with your
numeric pad on the right side of your keyboard, type in a three digit
combination to get the various results, and release the ALT key. This will
work in most applications(DOS, too!). The three digit combinations come from
directly out of your DOS manual, most likely in the back, in the character-set
(CODE-PAGE) tables. Σ∩jó¥!
COMMAND.COM....
Located in your root directory, it is an essential file. It is loaded up when
you start your computer, and re-loaded every time your re-enter DOS from
some programs. PROTECT IT! Make it read only by typing:
ATTRIB +r C:\COMMAND.COM
at the DOS command line, or from Program Manager in Windows by selecting File,
Run.
Internet Access....
Did you ever want to try full Internet access? NOW you can for FREE. Get 5
hours free by calling 1-800-365-4636 by *modem*. When you log on, press enter
a few times until it asks for a password. When it has "pw:", enter MODEM2 as
your password and you are on your way to trying 5 free hours of the Internet
using DELPHI online!
FREEnet....
If you haven't tried the local FREEnet yet, you are missing out on alot.
Although it is incredibly hard to get on(busy most of the day), it's FREE
and you can do many things like chat with many other users, connect with other
universities(even in different countries), and check out the libraries. It
isn't exactly the Internet, but hey, it's not too bad, and besides....it's
FREE! Call 368-3888 if you are in the Cleveland area. Seems node 2 shut down.
There are also numbers for Youngstown and other various cities across the
U.S. Log on as a visitor and get REGISTERED!
HD disks...
Unbelievable offer I just saw in an ad. 27 cents for an unformatted HD disk
and 29 cents for a formatted disk. Well, call 1-800-774-6668 and just mention
that you saw the ad in the Plain Dealer, and this company will send their
price list to you. That's less than $14 for FIFTY disks. GREAT OFFER!
Also check out SUN's Appliances.... they have 10 disks for $2.97, which is
about 29 cents a HD disk.
The Pit...
The Pit online door game is basically the ONLY door game I play. It is mainly
fun because of the competition among contenders from the BBS. To play the Pit,
call Lomcevak, the Spectrum, Medieval Realms, Shareware Depot, Dave's Den BBS,
Lost Time,or the Billboard, and they all have recent versions of this fun door
game. It is an RPG and adventure type door game. TRY IT! You can challenge me,
Caffeine Nicotine, when you are tough enough(LET'S GO HUNTER!). The newest
version, v4.03 is at Shareware Depot, the Billboard, and Lost Time.
Terminal programs...
What do I recommend? Well, two types of terminals are really good.
2400 users>>
When I originally had a 2400(like many of you), I used Telemate. Right now,
the best version available that I know of is 4.12. It's an EXCELLENT term
program for beginners and experts. You can download and edit files at the same
time, upload and edit your phone list simultaeously, and stuff like that.
Telemate is very convenient for use and if you have a 2400 baud modem, use it!
Unfortunately, the program doesn't seem to want to work too well with 14.4
users.. soooooo...
14400 users
TERMINATE v1.51 is no doubt the best terminal program available to 14.4 users.
Though I don't know how it does with 28.8 users, I know that it doesn't work
too well with 2400 users. At anyrate, this is the ULTIMATE term program out
there for DOS. With many protocols to choose from(easy to install externals),
and so many options to make it just perfect, it's bound to make anybody
satisfied. It has a audio CD player, it imports phonebooks from other term
programs, has a point system for FIDOnet, and has auto-modem detection!
So many countless options are included that you HAVE to download this now in
order to see how good it really is! Look for the file 0151TER1.ZIP and
0151TER2.ZIP at a local BBS and CHECK IT OUT!
new specific list..
Because so many have expressed a wish to have a more informational BBS list,
I decided to devote some of my time towards making a specific list that has
everything from the sysop's name to whether a registration form is needed to
be sent in. The original condensed list will still be supplied, but those that
want more info on a BBS can now get it. The completed list is due out in about
Issue #5.
Articles....
I need more articles people! Submit some articles to me PLEASE! Anything of
interest... or like a classified section. Lotsa people see this and hey..
it's FREE.
Best Buy...
If you've never been to Best Buy, you haven't seen the best in electronics
sales. You can listen to select new music with earphones at the store, and
you can test out the newest SUPERnes and Genesis games at the store! Most
single CD's(rather than a double like Forrest Gump) cost $11.99 TOPS! Some
are really cheap. All electronics equipment can be bought there, too.
Computers, audio equipment, speakers, the works! The store is great...
so if you live near the one by the Midway Mall in Elyria or the one near
Marshall's right by Great Northern Mall, CHECK IT OUT!
Also in Mayfield across the Golden Gate Plaza!
Internet mail...
If you haven't experienced yet, you are missing out on alot! Internet mail
allows users to be in contact with almost anybody! It's sort of like the
universal protocol between all BBS's. FREEnet, the Spectrum, and the Pleasure
Dome are just a few places where you can get I-net mail for free. All you have
to do is be a member. You can write to the president, anybody across in the
world, or even ME! Places with I-net mail allow you to write a message, and
then it gets sent at set times of the day(ask your sysop about it) to the
destinations. You can write to me at the following addresses:
alexander.koo@tpdome.en.com
alexander.koo@spec.org
gc164@cleveland.freenet.edu
It's cool, fast, and most likely FREE!
DOS key....
Starting at some version of DOS, Microsoft included a small TSR called DOSkey.
Chances are YOU have it. What it does is allows you in DOS to use the up and
down arrow to recall past commands. This is especially useful when you go back
and forth between programs or editing files. Once you type a command, it's
stored in RAM and pushing the up arrow on that upsidedown T section of arrows
on your keyboard will allow you to bring it up. To install, add the following
line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT:
c:\DOS\DOSKEY
Once you reload your autoexec.bat, you'll be set!
HD disks....FROM LOW DENSITIES!>>>
Not too many people know, but you can physically change a low density disk to
a high density disk. If you notice any small differences between a high
and a low density disk, you'll notice that the only real difference is the
little hole on the upper left side that's on the high density. Want to make a
low density 1.44 megs? Just punch a hole in the upper left to make it match
the hole in a high density. Use a hole puncher or a drill press if you want.
Personally, I don't think it's anywhere near worth the trouble, and if you try
it, you'll see what I mean. I'm not too sure it's %100 good for the data on
the disk, since low densities are of less quality than high densities, but if
you wanna try it, it does work. PERFORM AT YOUR OWN RISK! (besides....I'm not
too sure it's legal)
